Hi everyone! I’m Dr. Dan Abarientos. I was born in the Philippines and moved to Canada with my family when I was 4 years old. Surprisingly, I’m still fluent in Tagalog 😊. I lived most of my life in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After graduating from Life University in Georgia, I practiced for 10 years in my own community before my wife Danielle and I decided to bring our son Zevi to Calgary to be near family! We’ve been here since May 2023 and we’re loving it!

I became a chiropractor due to my own personal experience. As a high school athlete, I suffered with severe lower back pains from competitive badminton/volleyball/track. During that time my family was going to Maples Chiropractic, and they encouraged me to do the same. After a few weeks of regular chiropractic care, I felt 100% better and was able to continue playing the sports I was passionate about!

I do what I do now because I know it helps people get better! Not just physically but mentally, and not just short term but long term! My favourite part of chiropractic is giving patients their adjustments! I love seeing their smiles brighten up the room, especially when it’s the first time!

Magiyony Garcia is a Registered Massage Therapist. She graduated from Makami on August 14, 2017, with 300 hours of training.

“I have always wanted to study medicine but unfortunately, I could not upon arriving in Canada but I had the great opportunity to study something. It related to helping people reduce stress ailments and tension.

I started as a massage therapist with the support of my colleagues at Massage Heights, which I am very grateful for and even open to new techniques and learnings in this area.

My focuses are Swedish massage which helps to greatly reduce stress and tension, deep tissue massage to reduce muscle aches caused by daily overuse. Other techniques I use are trigger points, hot stones, revitalizing foot scrub, revitalizing facial massage etc. I also focus on prenatal massages. I am a member of CRTMA and I am excited to be a member of the Mount Royal Village Family Chiropractic.

Dr. Min Young Kim is a Registered Acupuncturist and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Doctor who graduated from the Canadian Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice that involves inserting fine thread-like needles (filiform) at specific points on the skin to help stimulate the energy flow or Qi (pronounced “chee”). This helps to create balance in the body by removing blockages, modulate hormones and neurotransmitters, reduce pain and stimulate the body’s natural healing ability. Traditional Chinese Medicine practice includes acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, cupping, Tui Na Massage, acupressure, moxibustion, gua sha and auricular therapy. All modalities are intended to improve and balance the flow of Qi.

Generally, chronic conditions require at least 10 Chinese acupuncture treatments to notice significant improvement. Acute or certain conditions may notice a difference in symptoms after the first or second treatment. It is based on each individual, and thus it will be different for every person.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture uses very fine needles that are gently inserted in specific acupuncture points. The sensation that is expected from the insertion of needles is not painful. There are pain receptors located at the skin’s surface and therefore, the patients may feel a tiny prick as the needle is inserted. Once the needle has passed the skin surface and has reached the underlying muscle, patients rarely feel any pain. The sensation achieved by acupuncture is called “De Qi” and it can include slight distension, tingling, warmth, numbness, heaviness, or aching. Many people find acupuncture very relaxing and often fall asleep.

“SIMPLY PUT, I WAS A SKEPTIC …” As a teenager, Dr. Patrick Maguire was very active in sports. Water skiing in the summer, he would go flying across the wake at as much as 90KMpH, and periodically “wipe-out” in a mass of arms, legs, and water skis… only to get back up and do it again. Playing hockey in the winter, he was a strong player working hard for the puck in the corner. The list goes on and on, with all of the associated injuries that are far too common, and all without thinking for a moment about what kind of injury might result to the neck, back and spine.

And then one day it happened – something went terribly wrong, and the pain in his lower back was beyond description. Dr. Maguire simply could not move.

At that time, the first step was typically to visit the medical doctor, and muscle relaxants were prescribed. Unfortunately, they didn’t even take the edge off the pain. Dr. Maguire tried exercising and stretching, but could hardly move. After over a week of suffering, his father suggested he go to a chiropractor, and Dr. Maguire remembers thinking, “I’m not going to one of those ‘Quacks’!”. (It’s so puzzling to think of today, why I thought this way about Chiropractic care! I had never even met a Chiropractor?!?!). After three more days of unbearable pain, Dr. Maguire finally relented and went to the chiropractor for the very first time.

In a word, it was amazing. After the very first adjustment, there was significant relief, and as care was continued, everything just got better and better. This is one of the many reasons why Dr. Patrick J. Maguire B.Sc., D.C. became a chiropractor.

Some years later, after following other aspirations, Dr. Maguire found himself needing something more – something where he could contribute more and live for a ‘Vision Greater Than Self.’ He remembered his experience in his teens and his first visit to the chiropractor and, after doing a lot of soul searching and research, he made his decision; Patrick Maguire was going to be a Doctor of Chiropractic!
